Chicago Eras Photo Session: What to Expect & How to Prepare

Your ERAS photo is a critical part of your residency application. These images are viewed by program directors across the country, so it’s important that your photo meets ERAS technical requirements while also presenting you in a professional, confident, and approachable way. Below is everything you need to know before your session.

What to Wear for Your ERAS Photo

ERAS photos should look polished, professional, and conservative. The goal is a clean, timeless headshot that reflects how you would appear in a clinical or interview setting.

Recommended attire:

  • Solid-colored suit jacket or blazer (navy, charcoal, black, or gray)

  • Button-down shirt or blouse in white or light neutral tones

  • Conservative tie for those choosing to wear one

  • Minimal jewelry and simple accessories

  • Clean, natural makeup and neatly styled hair

What to avoid:

  • Busy patterns, bold prints, or visible logos

  • Very bright or neon colors

  • Casual clothing (sweaters, t-shirts, denim)

  • Distracting accessories or overly trendy styles

I’m happy to help you choose between outfit options if you’re unsure what photographs best.

📸 ERAS Photo File Size & Technical Specs

ERAS has specific technical requirements for photo submission. I take care of all formatting to ensure your image is compliant and ready to upload. To be accepted by MyERAS, your residency application headshot must meet these technical requirements:

  • File type: JPG/JPEG or PNG.

  • Maximum file size: 150 KB or less.

  • Dimensions: 2.5 × 3.5 inches (portrait orientation).

  • Resolution: 150 dpi (the system primarily checks pixel dimensions and file size).

In pixel terms, this typically corresponds to 375 × 525 pixels at ≤150 KB for upload compliance.

You will also receive a high-resolution JPEG of your final image

Retouching & Photoshop Edits

  • Mini sessions include detailed Photoshop edits on up to one image, completed based on your specific requests.

  • Retouching may include skin refinement, minor distractions, and overall polish while maintaining a natural, professional appearance.

Image Delivery Timeline

  • You will receive a download link with a gallery that is a collection of the photos captured at your photo session color corrected and ready to download. Final ERAS photos are delivered within approximately one week of your session.
